Dual-Purpose Protection for Modern Networks
The INSIGHT S700 combines sensitive fault detection with system integration, delivering two powerful functions in one compact unit.
Operating either as a standalone earth fault relay or as a key element of the L700 Insight System, the S700 is designed for versatility and high performance. Installed at the substation, it connects directly to V0 and I0 through a core-balanced current transformer, enabling it to detect and respond to critical anomalies in the network with speed and accuracy.

Key Features
Purpose-built for reliability, the S700 delivers exceptional performance even in challenging fault conditions. Its ability to detect high-resistance earth faults — beyond 10kΩ — sets it apart as a valuable tool for protecting assets and improving network safety. Whether deployed independently or as part of a broader monitoring system, the S700 ensures accurate fault response where it matters most.
Stand-Alone Reliability
The S700 functions independently as a precision earth fault relay, offering utilities a simple yet powerful fault detection tool.
System Integration Ready
When paired with the L700, the S700 becomes part of a synchronised network-wide monitoring solution for advanced insight and control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes it is, targeted primarily at the detection of high resistance earth faults up to 10 kΩ, regardless of the system neutral treatment in use. It runs more than ten fault detection algorithms and is designed for quick and easy retrofit.
Firstly, the S700’s wide range of fault detection algorithms, which allow it to capture earth faults on both effectively and non-effectively earthed systems. Secondly, it uses two novel algorithms; Waveform Similarity Co-efficient (WSC) and Transient Reactive Power (TRP). The S700 also has an independent residual current input with extra sensitivity, which will be further improved if a core-balanced CT is used. In particular, high impedance earth faults are characterised by their non-sinusoidal waveforms due to arc extinguishing near the zero crossing. S700 uses high sampling rate (128 samples per cycle) and a special algorithm (Waveform Similarity Coefficient) to recognise such waveforms, which cannot be done with traditional sensitive earth fault relays.

Yes, the S700 comes with clip on CTs that are fitted around the substation CT secondary wires
There are a number of reasons. Existing protection, particularly if quite old, typically has very limited sensitivity (2-300 Ω to maybe 3 k Ω). The S700 delivers up to 10 kΩ so that hazardous high resistance faults can be detected. Secondly, the S700 has a large number of detection algorithms all working in parallel to increase reliability. When coupled with an L700 System or M700 system, hih resistance earth faults can be readily located on the network.
The S700 is installed on each feeder in the substation, and it provides definitive faulted feeder information to the L700 System. On non-effectively earthed systems it uses zero sequence voltage to determine directionality.
